I came out as transgender at 28, after two years of therapy spent making certain it wouldn't harm my children. It didn't. My husband and I have been together nearly fourteen years, and we're raising six kids. Before all that, I trained as an EMT, finished every prerequisite for nursing, and built a transportation company to six figures. I also survived a childhood of long-term abuse and two and a half years of homelessness. I'm not telling you this from the far side of it. That's the point.
Nursing programs and healthcare teams book me for two things: what patients in crisis are actually scanning for in the first thirty seconds, and the practical questions clinicians have about caring for patients in transition — charts that disagree with the person in the bed, getting it wrong and recovering, no lecture and no shaming.
Pride organizations and LGBTQ+ groups book me for the transition conversation nobody has: not the crisis version and not the triumph version, but the mechanics. What order I did things in. The two years of therapy that came before anything else, and why the whole point was making sure it wouldn't harm my kids. Telling my husband. Deciding who needed to know and who didn't. What eight years out actually looks like once the milestones are behind you. My experience went well — that isn't universal, and I don't pretend it is. What I can do is tell you what I think made the difference.
Student groups and general audiences book me for the harder one: how to build a life while it's still unfinished.
Messy in Motion is a three-book memoir series arriving in 2027 through Manuscripts. It's the long version of everything above — the parts that don't fit in a talk, told without the tidy ending. Ryan Serhant told me to write a book while I was busy building a company. It took a while, but here we are.
